Restoring livelihoods for the most vulnerable disaster survivors – both human and animal – is at the heart of Brooke USA’s mission. Our goal is to repair and rebuild communities by providing funds to support disaster recovery efforts. Catastrophic natural episodes —earthquakes, floods, wildfires, hurricanes, and storms— or manmade events —civil wars, political revolutions, and military take-overs— can have devastating effects on horses as well as humans.
In the face of the growing disasters, Brooke USA recognizes that the national priority for government is human life, but working animals often play a crucial role in the immediate and long-term aftermath of disastrous events. They deliver life-saving aid, and they are also used post-disaster to cope with a lack of infrastructure.
During the 2007 California wildfires, more than 1 million people and thousands of horses were evacuated. During the annual hurricane season, thousands of horses either die or are evacuated. Brooke USA has been there every inch of the way by partnering with organizations working on the ground and supporting the needs of equines and their owners.
During the floods in Pakistan, Brooke USA took immediate action, raising funds to provide drinking water and food to equines and their owners as well as temporary shade and shelters. Thanks to Brooke USA’s committed supporters, Brooke Pakistan teams were able to quickly set-up flood relief camps and mobile units traveled across the affected areas. They distributed food and fodder for animals while providing treatment for those injured and sick, who were also required to work even harder, to help their owners.
At Brooke USA, we know that working equines offer long lasting benefits, especially in post-disaster recovery as they are useful in transporting construction materials to rehabilitate homes, and facilitate access to water, goods, and medicines.
